About The Dalton School
The Dalton School occupies a singular position in American private education. Founded in 1919 by Helen Parkhurst on the principles of the Dalton Plan — a revolutionary pedagogy that emphasised student autonomy, responsibility, and collaborative learning — it has spent over a century proving that rigour and freedom are not opposites. Located on the Upper East Side, Dalton serves approximately 1,300 students from Kindergarten through Grade 12, drawing from across New York City and producing alumni who populate the faculties of the world’s leading universities as much as its boardrooms.

In Their Words — Head of School
“We are not preparing children for a single examination or a single path. We are preparing them to be the kind of people who will make something of whatever path they choose.”
Dr. James Lytle, Head of School
Philosophy
How they teach
The Dalton Plan remains the school’s intellectual spine. Students work through “assignments” — detailed, open-ended project frameworks — at their own pace, taking responsibility for managing their time and depth of inquiry. This is not unstructured: Dalton students meet high academic expectations, and the school’s university placement record is exceptional. What distinguishes the approach is the conviction that intrinsic motivation produces deeper learning than external pressure alone.
Outcomes
Where students go
Dalton graduates consistently gain admission to the most selective universities in the United States and the United Kingdom. In recent years, admitted institutions have included Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Oxford, and Cambridge. The school’s performing arts alumni include some of the most recognised names in American theatre and film.

“Dalton gave our daughter something we hadn’t expected: the ability to direct her own learning. By the time she reached university, she was more prepared than almost anyone around her — not because she knew more, but because she knew how to learn.”
